Summary and QualificationsPOSITION SUMMARY:A diagnostic medical
sonographer, or ultrasound technologist, is a person who uses
ultrasound machines to view and interpret images with sound waves
for the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions.POPULATION
SERVED:
Core competencies will be assessed primarily on the following
patient population(s) served: Cardiovascular, GI, GU, GYN
conditions and diseases including but not limited to:
cholecystitis, BPH, oncology, uterine fibroids, fetal ultrasound,
etc.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Operate ultrasound equipment to its full capability with
knowledge of an A-mode, M-mode, B-mode, Doppler, and real time
techniques, selecting the proper transducer frequency and diameter
for performance of the examination.
- Maintains production and quality of images by following
established standards and procedures; capable of recognizing a
diagnostic quality scan as well as artifacts from
anatomic/pathologic structures.
- Identifies patient service requirements by establishing
personal rapport with potential and actual patients and other
persons in a position to understand service requirements.
- Ensures operation of ultrasound equipment by completing
preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's
instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs;
maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and
techniques.
- Maintains ultrasound supplies inventory by checking stock to
determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing
and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of
supplies.
- Complies with federal, state, and local legal and professional
requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating
future legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising
management on needed actions.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending
educational workshops; reviewing professional publications;
establishing personal networks; participating in professional
societies.
- Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with
procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Gains patient cooperation by reducing anxieties; providing
explanations of treatment; answering questions.
- Prepares patient for ultrasound procedure by positioning
patient; moving equipment into specified position; adjusting
equipment controls to set exposure factors.
- Protects patients and employees by adhering to
infection-control policies and protocols.
- Documents patient care services by charting in patient and
department records.
- Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as
needed.
- Receives verbal orders for examinations from a licensed
practitioner.REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS
- Registered by the ARDMS or ARRT (S)
- Current BCLS certificationREQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- High School Graduate
- Graduate of an accredited Sonography program
- Comprehensive knowledge of anatomy and positioning
- Knowledge of department, hospital and universal infection
control policies
- Must have effective communication and listening skillsPREFERRED
EDUCATION, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE
AND ABILITIES
- At least two years of experience/training in diagnostic
ultrasound in at least two specialty areas (i.e. abdomen and
Ob/Gyn)
- Extensive experience with available Ultrasound equipment in
terms of product evolution, troubleshooting and quality
control
- Must be mature and responsible, able to use initiative and
independent judgment when necessary, and capable of working without
supervision within guidelines established by the director of the
division. Self-motivation with regard to increasing one's level of
understanding and knowledge of the field is important, as is a
background that will qualify one to teach diagnostic
ultrasound.
- Knowledge of ultrasound techniques should be thorough. The
Diagnostic Sonographer should have current knowledge of neurology,
abdominal, obstetric, and gynecologic applications.Las Palmas
