Job descriptionMedical Receptionist/Billing Specialist Description Busy Ophthalmology/Optometry practice seeking experienced Front Desk Receptionist/Billing Specialist. Ensures Billing is properly billed for and collected including claim submission, claim payments, claim follow up, denials and re-processing. Critical thinking and the ability to work independently are essential to success in this position. This position also required front desk coverage when needed.Receptionist Responsibilities: Welcomes patients and visitors with a positive, warm disposition Schedules appointments in person or over the phone Checks patients in and out Answers patient questions; maintains the reception area Ensures availability of treatment information by filing and retrieving patient records Maintains patient accounts by obtaining, recording, and updating personal and financial information Performs all insurance and benefits verifications and pre-authorizations Prepares medical records.Duties include, but are not limited to: Obtaining referrals and pre-authorizations as required for office visits and procedures. Checking eligibility and benefits verification for treatments and procedures. Reviewing patient bills for accuracy and completeness and obtaining any missing information. Preparing, reviewing, and transmitting claims using billing software, including electronic and paper claim processing. Following up on unpaid claims within standard billing cycle timeframe. Checking each insurance payment for accuracy and compliance with contract discount. Calling insurance companies regarding any discrepancy in payments if necessary Identifying and billing secondary or tertiary insurances. Reviewing accounts for insurance of patient follow-up. Researching and appealing denied claims. Answering all patient or insurance telephone inquiries pertaining to assigned accounts. Setting up patient payment plans and work collection accounts Working aged receivables. Post Insurance and Patient Payments Answer patient questions regarding EOBs, patient balances, copays, deductibles, write-offs, and other billing issues. Resolves patient complaints or explains why certain services are not covered Submits insurance claims to clearinghouse or individual insurance companies electronically or via paperCMS-1500 form;Prepares and submits secondary claims upon processing by primary insurer. Follows up with insurance payers on underpaid, unpaid, or rejected claims. Researches and resolves problems, re-submits claims, and prepares appeal letters for claim denials Process Patient Statements Work with Collection Agency on Delinquent Accounts Follows all internal billing processes and procedures Follows all regulations and guidelines set by Medicare, state programs, and HMO/PPO plans Follows HIPAA guidelines in handling patient informationFront desk coverage when needed.Other duties may apply.Requirements Minimum of 2 years of proven experience in medical billing required Adherence to laws and best practices in regards to dealing with customers and data Must be comfortable dealing with numbers and the processing of financial information Results-driven and patient Must have a high degree of attention to detail and trustworthiness. Optometry and Ophthalmology billing experience preferred. Qualified candidates must understand insurance carrier rules and edits, as well as possess good customer service skills.
